Río Abiseo National Park

Río Abiseo protects forest and archaeology. A riverside nature visit is not the same as access to Gran Pajatén.

What to expect

Shihui waterfall is a specific visitor site for which MINCETUR describes access through Juanjuí, Huicungo and the Churo checkpoint. This provides a starting point for arranging a suitable journey, not permission to explore the whole park. Archaeological Gran Pajatén is not automatically part of that outing.

How it fits into a journey

Plan through Juanjuí/Huicungo with separate travel time and overnight arrangements. This is not a spare afternoon on the Tarapoto–Moyobamba route.

Practical answers

Is the entire park closed to tourists?

That is too broad: visits to Shihui with prior permission are documented. It does not mean visitors may enter every part of the park.

Can I visit Gran Pajatén on the same tour?

Do not assume so. Ask precisely which area the permission covers; a river outing does not grant access to archaeological core areas.
