Callao

In Callao, the port sits at the heart of the story. A fortress guarded the coast, large ships lie on the water, and balconies line narrow streets in the old centre. Further towards La Punta, buildings stretch along a small peninsula. The coast here feels quite different from the clifftops of Miraflores.

Callao brings together military history, art in old buildings, seafood restaurants and residential waterfront streets. Islands with seabirds and sea lions lie offshore. A visit can become an urban outing, a long lunch with a walk or a boat trip. Each deserves its own place in your plans.

Real Felipe and the defence of the port

Fortaleza Real Felipe was built in the eighteenth century to protect Callao's port and Lima from attacks. Its pentagonal layout and heavy walls show how important the sea was as an approach. Pay attention to the shape of the complex: the defensive structures are the main reason to visit.

The fortress suits an interest in military history or an appetite for exploring a substantial building. Access to parts of the grounds is restricted. If walking is difficult, ask the museum exactly which sections you can reach and use that answer to decide whether the visit suits you.

Monumental Callao and Casa Fugaz

The historic centre has republican-era houses, balconies and cobbled streets. Around the old Edificio Ronald, the cultural initiative Fugaz works with artists and residents. Art, music and exhibitions give buildings and streets new uses. Casa Fugaz at Jirón Constitución 250 is a specific arrival point for this part of Callao.

Alongside the murals, look at the buildings housing the galleries: doors, balconies and passageways tell another part of the story. For studio visits or activities, Fugaz's programme is a more useful starting point than a general walking tour promising ‘street art’. It helps you choose between exploring outdoors and seeing work inside too.

Chucuito and La Punta

Chucuito lies on the approach to La Punta. It has a fishing history and houses built with materials including wood and adobe. Beyond it, La Punta occupies a small peninsula with residential streets and a waterfront promenade. It is a natural place to spend longer by the water after visiting the centre.

Choose the area around Malecón Pardo or Playa Cantolao for a walk. Part of the pleasure is a simple pause: a drink, a view across the bay, then deciding whether to continue. A waterfront walk and an island excursion start in different places and need different amounts of time; agree on the exact meeting point for a boat trip.

Out to Cavinzas and Palomino

Cavinzas supports seabirds including Humboldt penguins, while the Palomino rocks are known for sea lions. They belong to a protected coastal area. A trip is about watching the landscape and animals in their habitat. What you see at any particular moment depends on conditions.

Discuss the boat, boarding arrangements, route and option to remain on board with an operator authorised for the area. Ask what happens if sea conditions prevent departure. A trip offering swimming involves different considerations from observing wildlife from the boat. Choose what you feel comfortable with and follow local instructions about keeping your distance from animals.

Seafood by the port at Cabos

Cabos stands by the port at the entrance to Chucuito, overlooking the museum submarine Abtao. Its menu includes tiradito de pejerrey with ají amarillo, a yellow chilli, and fried squid and pejerrey fish with yuca, or cassava. You can choose between a cold fish preparation and something warm and crisp.

Make lunch part of the visit. From this side of the port, you can continue towards Chucuito and La Punta or return to the historic buildings. If you are also booking a boat trip, arrange the meal around the agreed return time and allow for delays at sea.

Getting to the right part of Callao

Use a specific destination when arranging transport: Real Felipe, Casa Fugaz, your restaurant or the agreed pier. ‘Callao’ covers too wide an area. For a first visit, an arranged journey there and back is convenient; a guided walk also benefits from clear start and finish points.

If you want to combine the visit with a flight, treat the airport as a separate destination. Luggage, check-in and traffic all affect how much time remains. With an overnight stay in Lima, you can make Callao an outing in its own right and decide where to linger without fitting it around a short connection.
